Recently I’ve heard a lot of good things about ipsy, the beauty subscription service started by Michelle Phan. I was also attracted to the price ($10 as opposed to the standard $20, with free shipping, plus you get a makeup bag) so a few months ago, I joined their waitlist. It opened in early March for me, and I received my first bag in mid April. Let’s take a look at my ipsy April Bag!

What’s inside?!

The ipsy April bag was white with hot pink trim. The theme was “Pretty in Pink.” I thought it was very cute, and it was a great size for my purse. I’d actually been on the hunt for the perfectly sized bag for my purse and this fit the bill. I can see the white getting grimy rather quickly though. (A cute detail which I forgot to take a picture of is that the inner lining is striped and printed with the ipsy logo.)

I have to apologize for the awful quality of these photos first. I normally use daylight bulbs for photos, but I, for whatever reason, decided to change out to soft light bulbs the other day. I didn’t notice until I’d taken these pictures and I tried my hardest to color correct them but you can tell the color temp varies wildly on a lot of these shots. For the record, I switched back to daylight bulbs and I’m seriously looking at buying or making a light box…

Voila!

I received:
MicaBeauty Cosmetics Mineral Eye Shadow in Earth
Sexy Hair Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal treatment
Be a Bombshell blush in Beach Please
Sations nail polish in Of Corset I’ll Call You

With the exception of the Sexy Hair treatment, all the products are full-sized.

I was a little confused about what the MicaBeauty offering was meant to be. At first I thought it might be another blush, or a finishing powder. I eventually figured out it’s a mineral eye shadow. The shade name is Earth, which I find rather odd considering the shade itself — it’s an ultra shimmery neutral shell pink. To me, the name earth conjures up images of browns or perhaps olive greens. It’s very pretty, if not super pigmented. This is a workhorse shade which I can see working on lots of skintones.

The Sexy Hair Soy Renewal treatment is your typical silicone-and-a-bit-of-argan-oil treatment that’s been exploding among hair products lately. It comes out as a light amber-colored oil, but it’s non-greasy feeling in hair. I wasn’t wildly impressed but it’s nice to throw into an overnight bag. Some other ipsy subscribers received their hair powder, which I would much rather have received! I use Schwarzkopf Osis+ Dust It mattifying powder quite frequently to add texture and lift to my hair.

The blush is a cool-toned hot Barbie pink. The color doesn’t suit my skin tone that well, but it has a nice smooth texture, probably owing to the talc content. Thanks to the poor lighting and my nonexistent photog skills, the actual color of the blush is closer to the swatch than the pan.

Of Corset I’ll Call You is a nude medium-toned pink. It took about three coats for it to reach full opacity. It’s a safe pink, one that I would not pick out for myself, but a staple color.

Like some other beauty subscriptions, for the month of April, ipsy subscribers were entitled to discounts on each brand represented. I did not partake this month, but I found the discounts to be fairly generous — for example, the Be a Bombshell discount was 30% off and a free eyeshadow.

Overall, I’m very happy with my first ipsy bag. The fact that I received 3 full-sized products alone sells the subscription for me, when other popular services tend to offer all sample sizes. The price in particular, as I noted above, is great as it’s half of what the industry standard has been trending towards. In addition, I get a cute little makeup bag — although, if I continue the subscription for a long time, I can foresee that becoming a hoarders type situation. Drowning in a sea of bags…

Well, there are worse ways to go out.

  1. Looks like a good bag, but if they always send a bag then you’ll turn into a cosmetic bag lady 😉 I suppose you could donate the bags to a local charity.

    • That’s a great idea! I know women’s shelters in particular always like to receive cosmetic items so the ladies can put themselves together for job interviews and such. I think I’ll do that! 🙂
